now most tutorials say blah blah blah with orbs, so much messing around with soddin gaussian blur its unbelievable
(ignore teh dumb spellings im young!)
ok first start ur new doc as a 400x400 doc n insted of filling with black i want you to use a gradiant and i decided to use a black with a darkish grey with the dark grey on the bottom its so that the next effect shows up well

then do the unexpected, click filter-render-lighting effects
now default looks cool as it is but choose your colour if you want, i guess i can let u do that

now that may look pretty as it is but who care tbh its not an orb quiet yet but as u might well guess its just missed out the things like gausian blur and stuff and already set out your colours
so grab your marquee tool hold down n select the circle for those who do not know and hold shift whilst you drawn a pretty circle round the bit you want...

mine dusnt look great i know
anyway go to selections then click inverse tab the delete button on your keboard press CTRL+d to deselect then make a new layer fill it black move it behind the orb layer and move your orb into the middle

now just add some little details to make it look a tad shiney like glare of a window or a big shine or what ever u feel like doing i just decided to stick with a big glare

it seems a bit blank so if you want add a border by doing ctrl+click on the orb layer make a new layer thengo to edit then stoke click outside and the rest is up to u
mess with the blending options of the layer with brevel and stuff and voila orb i went ahead and used this effect for a logo for myself
