I'm not too keen on gaming and the likes, but I'm pretty sure you can rent servers to host your games on.
Then again, you can always buy one and constanly maintain it, and watch your free time quickly shrnk.

If your wanting to set up your own gaming server you don't actually need a server. I know for Unreal Tournament 2004, i didn't need to buy a whole new computer and install Linux/Server 2003 to run it on either. If you go to the games manufacterers website, they might provide some files to set up your own gaming server or if your lucky like i was, you can create a server through the actual retail game itself.
What game is it for? Is it personal or are you intending to make money out of it?

P.S If you are behind a NAT/Firewall make sure you open the ports for that game so that people can connect to your server (computer).

My friend owns a hosting company, you can got to http://www.bl1ndhosting.com/ and contact and try and get a hold of him. He will probably have the answer for you.

im try to set a Counter-strike server and how about ftp
? can anyone tell me how to set an account of ftp up or :S ?

download the Counter-Strike Server files from their websites. As for the FTP, there're many programs for this. LiteServe, BulletProof, OpenFTPd are examples...
