When I go to begin making a template for a website, how big should my background image be ?

I made a "Site Under Construction PAge" and it looks too big.

always make shure that your site can be viewed on a 800x600 resolution

so make your background silghtly smaller than those dimensions ;)

Tad to big, on a good web site, no visitor has to scroll sideways(down is fine).

A very tiny amount of people use anything smaller than 800x600 anymore, so I would reccomend around 750px wide and however high you want.

If you must go bigger, don't go bigger than 900px wide.

These are the width of the different resolutions, the height is your choice.

800x600 : 755px
1024x768 : 1000px

Why not? You can go up to 1000px without any problems, where does the 900 come from actually?

Try and make your design work within 770 pixels width. Even through the majority has 1024x768 room, many browsers have an optional left-side navigation window which reduces the Web page display pane into 800 pixels width. Staying at 770 pixels gives the right edge plenty of room for the browser window's scrollbars.

errr lol i brought the 900 up :D

I use 900 normally but not always. if you want to create a portfolio, I recommend about 800x1000 or 800x900

But its all your choice

I always use something between 700 and 780

Reason being that I want to appeal to the widest possible audience.

When I'm designing a layout, I set my canvas to be at 768x480.

This is just for design purposes only, I code my website in CSS to make it a 'liquid' layout, so it's nice and stretchy. ;)

I also set up a grid composed of 96x96 pixels, and have 6 inner-boxes of within those dimensions to help with layout alignment. This helps me out drastically.

900 was a random number, subconsiously, I think I based it off of pistol's post.
