Create a 500 x 100 pixel image and select the brush tool, select a grunge brush you want lots of different grunge brushes about 20 so that you dont repeat one. The next step is to set the opacity of the brush to 40% and the flow to 100% like so:

and create a new layer called "Grunge Base".

then proceed to cover this bottom layer with different grunge brushes, tap the mouse once for each brush do not drag the brushes because that looks rubbish.

You should get somthing like :

I know it doesn't look very good yet but hold ya horse's we are getting to the good bit, create a new layer called "Top Layer" and change the Brushes opacity to 100%. Do the same agian and you should end up with somthing like:

Take note that the grunge brushes on the bottom layer are sharper than the ones on the top, and i have used the same brush more than once on the bottom. Feel free to use a wispy brush of some sort on yours to give it a nice effect it doesn't have to be stricktly a grunge brush because thats boring and limits you. The next step is to create a color balances between the two layers, my suggestion is you start with the top and then do the bottom layer, after you have done both layers you will have a layer pallet which looks like this:

Now i cant tell you how to color your signature because it will be different to mine because of the brushes or where you put it, but my suggestion is to spend 5 mins on each color balance and then keep changing them untill YOU are satified because its you who has to put up with the end result.

My end result was:

Hope this has helped you, text effects will be covered in another tutorial but this is one of my finished grunge signatures.
