I've been finding quite a few Sin City effect tutorials on the web, and most are complicated and time consuming. I've found a way to get a Sin City effect in about a minute using Photoshop filters. Granted, this will not produce a super-quality Sin City effect, but it can produce a quick Sin City effect without too much effort.

1. Grab an image. Mine is a 500x375 picture of the gorgeous Keira Knightley.

2. Duplicate the base layer. Name it "Effect" or something.

3. Go to Filter > Sketch > Stamp and use the following settings:

4. Merge the layers.

5. Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer. Filter > Blur Gaussian Blur and set radius to 10.

6. Merge layers. Take your smudge tool. Pick a soft-edge brush and set the strength to 50%. Now lighty smooth out the edges of the black-meets-white areas.

7. Done. My result:

The effect does in fact look just a bit cheesy, but its still recognizable as a psuedo Sin City effect. I didn't really spend a lot of time on this, but that was the point. So if you my smudging looks kinda crappy you know why.

FYI, Keira Knightley has never been a redhead, I just used PS to make her one. I think she looks better with red hair anyhow :P

Not really a sin city effect......Sin City is simply desaturated, soft lighted, and then spats f artistically meaningfull color thworn in there......

this tut does mke for a cool effect, but it doesnt seem to be much of a Sin City lookalike...
