dont extrude in edges, u wont get the result ur looking for, just extrude small groups of faces in, think of cracks in a wall

Mind telling me how you went about it? I usually just select the faces - subdivide then select the faces which I want to extrude and then do an extrude :) leads to lot of triangles :)

Doing a inner extrude on the selection and then doing a negative extrusion works just as well and doesn't produce any triangles. :(

Just thought I'd mention that as I had used it in the mic i made :D
