if your just starting to use php, this is gonna take a very long time. u can either download a script somewhere or follow some tutorials and build your way up.

This isn't phpBB? It's custom made i think from JayMz, but it's still in the same class!

It's going to take a looooooong time for you to code it. I'm coding one for my site I have the majority of it up but it's still in the work, my site I don't think will ever be completely finished.

For the record my name is Jaymz (I dislike the alternate caps :() and I can't code to save my life. However, Jay, the Boss (to the power of two, look at his avatar it proves it ) can code extremely well and is the mastermind behind P2L. Top all that off with a sexy physique and we have Master Jay.

There are many tutorials on creating cms. Just create a simple cms and make the page to link out.
Simple. Done

Jay left as shown here:

p2l is scratch coded, it doesnt use a script. For a portal i would suggest you use ipb portal, phpnuke, e107, or other cms type script (mambo, joomla etc) or of course write your own.

Many people believe gthey are compliacted but they are not. Its just simple database scripting.

Haha, Rayman + BidDog this post is like 8 months old?!??
edit: oh its Raymans topic, fair bumping <_<

To code a portal ainīt simple. Actually, itīs hard as hell.
If you want to start, you should do as .Matt said, try Nuke, Mambo or Joomla or something.
If you want to code one for yourself, try to download those systems and view the code, you might get some useful ideas.

Iīve coded on a portal for a real long time now, I guess about six months, and Iīm far from completion. I started from scratch, I had no idea how to do it, and only had a basic understanding for PHP.

To code a CMS of your own for sure is a great way to learn, but itīs not done just like that. Follow the advices of the other people here, and good luck! :D

The hardest thing for my to code for my cms script ... was the authentication.

Other then that... Everything's a breeze.
