Hello i am using this tutorial,

i get to step four where it says hit the delete key.

i get the following error,

Could not complete your request because the content of the layer is not directly editable.

so i ignore that and carried on with the styles and shadings but all i end up with is black box.

Any ideas where i am going wrong?

Youve not locked the layer in anyway have you?

Not done anything to the layer apart from what it says

Try rasterizing the layer before cutting it.
Layer>>Rasterize>>Layer

that seemed to work althought my polaroid photo is black and cant get it t over lap my photo
