im confused as to what i actually do to upload my website onto the www and allow people to see it? do i NEED to purchase a domain and server or are there other options? i did a search and came up with no info on the forums...thanks!

You can choose a free host (click for list).
Most of them give you a subdomain, although you can pick one for free like *.tk or *.co.nr

Then you have the "paid" option. There're lots of good companies which offer good hosting plans. The same with domains too.

Once you get your hosting, just upload (using a FTP client, like Filezilla) your website. The index.html or index.php will be your index page.

Yeah, if you have future plans for your website it would be best to buy a hosting plan that comes with a domain. It depends upon what you are doing though. Also, some hosts have an upload form you can use if you don't feel like learning how to FTP stuff (really easy anyways)
