That's strange. Since yesterday, all layer mask I create just don't work.
When I try to delete a part of it with the eraser tool or the selection tool and then pressing delete, nothing happens. I don't get any error message.
But, for example, if I use the gradient tool on it, then the layer mask works...
any ideas?

Make sure you select the picture on the layers palette not the layer mask and see what happens.... if it works then im happy to help.
