hey guys, I just installed my new version of Photoshop CS2 on my 2.4GHZ pc with 480MB Ram.
It however is extremely slow. like it needs to refresh a couple of times to just insert some text, like one character.

Did I install it incorrectly??

Check what backround programs you have running.

Possibly disable Hardware Acceleration and that may help.

Close any Window Skinning Application, Use the Classic Skin, Just take all programs that could use RAM And Close them.

Whoa! 480mb of RAM is your problem. CS2 runs fine on my 1.5 ghz with 1 GB of RAM. You'd be surprised at how much RAM helps. Upgrade to at least 1 GB. Anything below 512 is going to be VERY slow and even 512 is slow, especially in CS2 which requires almost 400 MB of RAM to run. Windows XP requires 256 so you need at least 656 mb of ram just to be able to run XP and CS2. Then you have to add in background processes and everything, taking the toal RAM needed up to 800 mb probably. 1 GB is my minimum.

EDIT: Oh and disabling hardware acceleration with slow things down even more. Instead of using the video card it will use up processor power and RAM instead. If anything turn hardware acceleration to 100%.

Yes, but lots of people have the same problem like you. Ignore comments like add more ram, scratch disks and things like that, because in this case it's not going to help, yeah, maybe 10%, but the real problem won't go away. This is a flaw in either the graphics driver or the way Photoshop uses the driver. Adobe is pointing the finger at the driver manufacturers, the driver manufacturers point the finger back saying they haven't found any problems with their drivers related to Photoshop CS2.

Check on Google newsgroups for

"Photoshop CS" slow

and you'll find lots of people who have the same problem. Sometimes there are solutions, many times there aren't. I tried each one of them, including a different graphics card, but it didn't solve anything.

actually adding more ram does work.
i used to have photoshop 7 running with 256 RAM, it went prefectly smooth, then i upgareded to 9 cs2 and suddenly it was very slow. shortkeys not responding, 2 seconds loading to fill a background, seconds of loading to apply a simple filter and many more. well, i was planning to add more ram before so i did. i have 1280 now and 9cs 2 runs just as fast as 7 used to run. so adding more ram worked for me :)

RAM is like duct tape, I can fix anything. You can quote me on that :)

odd still, since my CS1 runs fine without any hassles at all. sure when i work on high-res a4 sized images it gets sort of slugish.

however, CS2 on my home pc gives the same problems, just a little faster. i have 1GB of ram on that pc on a 2.8ghz amd athlon xp with 160gb hdd. hmmmm will check out the google groups.

thanks guys. glad to know it aint just me!

Just a side note:

Athlon XP's don't actually run at 2.8 ghz. For example, an Athlon XP 3200+ only runs at 2.16 ghz, but AMD has other technologies that they use to help make the most of it. The 3200+ number just means that its equivalent to Intels 3.2 ghz Pentium 4 chip. In your case I presume you are running an Athlon XP 2800+ at 2.08 ghz. So your supposedly 2.8 ghz chip is actually 2.08. Now, I am an AMD guy myself so I'm definitely not bashing your PC. I just like people to know this stuff. :D

Now me personally, I have never had a real major slow down even with my slow Pentium 4 1.5 ghz, 333 mhz FSB, 1 GB Ram. So, you guys may want to scan your computers for viruses and if not that scan for spyware, which can sometimes be worse than viruses.

CS2 is just naturally slower. I also noticed a slow down, but nothing unexpected. It has increased system requirements compared to CS. Therefore, it will run slower than CS on ANY computer.:)

I don't know how you can do this since the minimum amount is about 380 mb. I don't know how your run windows XP on that either. Also, I think you meant 128 mb, because 126 is simply impossible. :)
