On the bottom left you should see the materials window thing. Go to File>New Material. When you're done playing around with the material settings, just drag it over the object (top right).
z77, I downloaded the Materials from your site. They look great, but for some reason whenever I go to load materials and select them, nothing happens. What must I do?

Bleekster, I have a video tutorial that shows adding materials (from loading new ones to applying them, etc) in the c4d section...
