lol, well the first thing you wanna do is know your stuff .. most companies are looking for the following:
(X)HTML
CSS2
Javascript
SQL
ASP
Java
Design applications such as - Photoshop, Illustrator, FireWorks,
Office applications: Word, Exel, Access, Outlook.
some more up to date companies will ask for PHP/Mysql ........ and the list goes on.
This is taken out of an actual job post on a Job Search site here In Canada.
To tell you the truth in most cases the person in charge of hiring for IT has no clue what they are looking for, unless it's a larger corporate company that has IT managers that are in charge of hiring.
I would suggets knowing the following:
XHTML
CSS
Photoshop
Javascript
PHP/Mysql
Flash and a working knowledge of ActionScript
Descent portfolio showing at least one example of each of the above, NO freeservers stuff or Geo cities .. if you are at least a little serious about web stuff, you will have your own paid domain and hosting
Any additional programming is definitely an A+ ... knowing 3D and extreme ActionScript is an apple for the teacher for sure.....
Long story short, you can never know too little. Today you might be a genious in CSS tomorrow you realize that you are hopeless at PHP ... and once you get up to snuff on PHP you realize that AJAX is the new fad and once you .... well you get the point.
At least get my little list of knowledge a go ..... be able to be interviewed in an inteligent manner, as in know at least what .net is or what a CMS is or what the standard banner sizes are and screen resolution is now a days ... and what would be the next standard do you think? will it be the cell phone?
Your answeres may not be what they had in mind, but if you make an inteligent response with your personal thoughts you might just get hired because you are friendly, very approachable, willing to work endless hours even if it involves a 24 hour cram session of something you have never encountered and your dead line is in 2 days .... that happens alot, or at least once you start working someone ... get it done .. and get it done now, bah I hate authority .. but some time you gotta bite down and hold your tounge till you own the company and tell that guy that you are down sizing and you are going in a different direction ... and he's not a part of it
--------------------- Note: -----------------------------------------------------
If you noticed I'm going on and on and on about this. It's true. There is no "ONE" way of telling you what will get you a job.
Keep in touch with that list I mentione above and you should do just fine and have an I am smart attitude, with resonable knowledge to back you up.
Dude!! Seriously !! Keep your chin up !! If you love graphics, computers and hate but still learn coding ... you will have alot of sleepless nights .. might even deveolp a serious sleeping dissorder ,but once you are making like 35-60,000/year you will be driving to work /or driving to the company you own in your brand new BMW that you will be paying off in the next 2 years instead of 20 years + both your testies
Don't forget, we are all here to help, and help is always appreciated and returned. (n'less you are some egotistic armpit monky and .... you get the point)
LIFT OUT!! (yeah !! 10 word response my butt!! ... see I ramble !!)

Edit: What the heck is an .. and I quote my self
I swear my wife is feeding me somthing funny ....

But yeah, this could be "just" my opinion, I hope you will get other replies so you get a better idea of where you stand. I have been in this for about 5 years now, on and off and I think I have a good grasp on the direction of things.
Good luck, and remember we are all here to help and not just show off
Ciao.
