Greetings,

I'm about to make myself an online portfolio to promote myself, and just use it as my personal yet professional presence online. However, I'm still at the domain name stage. I was thinking of something short, simple and easy to remember. I don’t want anything gimmicky, though, and perhaps something that actually relates to my name etc.

My name is Stephen Daly, and I was thinking of something along the lines of the following:

sdalyonline.com
sd4ly?
stephendalyonline.com, etc!

Would any of you care to help me come up with a practical domain name? I'll welcome all suggestions... ;)

Thanks!

:)

i would just put your full name as the url, like mine is joshhamor.com
I think that is the most professional approach to it.
So Stevendaly.com, or alot of business are able to come up with comical yet effectively memorable names, if you could do that that would be good also.
i.e haveamint.com

My full name is already registered so I've been trying to think up of different ones ;)

and sd.com wouldn't work cause it has to be three characters or more ;)

Yeah, I agree, but you shouldn't abbreviate too much.

Word of advice.

Never incorporate your name for a www. with numbers.

Such as "mark" can be "m4rk".

It looks very unprofessional.

Without looking at what the others have posted (just so i dont get ideas crossed), for your portfolio. Here are some I have www dots i have thought of for you.

Stephen Daly

stephendaly.org
sdalygfx.com or .org
dalysgfx.com or .org
sdalyportfolio.com
dalys.org or .com (im sure .com is taken)

...or think about something unique. Mabye something like a professional nickname, like what you would call a business.

Think! lol

Hope you found this useful.

envvy: so you say websites with number on the name are very unprefessional.. hmm.. wait a sec

www.pixel2life.com
www.2advanced.com
www.13dots.com
and many many more professional studios have numbers on their names.

back on topic: Stephen:

If you really want to implement your name on it, I would go for your fullname or for stevend.com

I personally don't like realnames on the domainname.. but that's just me :P

good luck on your site

Nono I think possibly he meant using numbers instead of letters, like leet speak. Such as l33t, etc.

Envyyy:

Thanks for your imput, I'll bear them in mind. I'm favouring "SDalyFX" atm.

funkysoul:

thanks for the gl, I need it lol! I always have trouble coming up with names, hehe. :P

I said name. I never said it was bad for a site to have numbers in thier domain. But when you have to show someone professional your portfolio, your not going to tell them to go to st3ph3nd41y.com to show your great work, your going to want them to go to something simple NOT to a site where your going to have to look back and forth on a lil piece of paper just to remember what a site was called. Why complicate things?

Usually numbers in domains are used for abbreviation, "2"-two, "13"-thirteen ... of course thats easier, but how are you supposed to abbreviate a persons name .

...and its E n v y y y ... i spaced it out for you since your eyes might hurt from sitting too close to the screen :P

Stephen,

I'm not sure where you are located, but here is a little peice of advice. If you own the domain name Stephen Daly.com, .net, .org even .com.com then it easy easy to associate your name with your potential business. (if thats the intention of the portfolio, to gain business/recognition) From my experiences in Canada, running your business in your own name is the easiest and cheapest way. In Canada only (as far as I know), You can run a Sole Proprietorship under your own name without filing for a business license. You just end up claiming income under your self employment section of your taxes. I'm not sure if you live in the states or what not, but you should check into that. Make sure that your thinking far enough ahead, as changing the name that people know you as wont go over well in most cases, so be cautious. My suggestion would be stephen-daly.com, or stephendaly.net. If you are running a business, then when you write invoices or contracts, make sure to have the name as Stephen Daly, and then you avoid registering or certain taxes (GST in Canada) without paying a cent (All legal too).

Hope that didn't hinder your cause!

- Mat
