well i would think of making a very busy gradient, since there are so many colors. By busy I mean with a lot of colors, the ones you need so that you can get that effect. Actually, I would think of multiple busy gradients since i think its impossible to get that entire effect with one. Ive never tried anything like that though so its just me thoughts in theory. But then again was that image made in photoshop, or is it real?

Drag down the opacity to get that effect.

Here is a test pic of how easy it is.

1. Make a new layer.
2. Pick the market tool, the one you copy and drag things with, and drag a suitable area
3. Pick the gradient tool and drag in it, also be sure that it's transparent From start you problably can have it none transparent but did try it and it looked bad.
4. In layer window you will find something called "opacity" 0% means you cant se it and 100% means you can see it clearly. So drag down untill it suit you.

are you talking about the low opacity blue line over the book? or the brown lines on the book? be specific.

For the Blue line:

1) Make a new layer
2) Use the marquee tool to shape out the line.
3) Then fill it with the color of your choice.
4) Go to Window > Layers
5) Go to "Opacity" at the top of the layer window, and drag it to the left, you'll notice on your image the line is fading, so just set it how you want it.

For the book:

This is a complicated thing to explain, and I don't wanna type it all out if you didnt want that, but basically, you'd have to make a gradient that has tons of shades of your color, then use it on what you wanted, then if you wanted it like the book, use the marquee or polygonal lasso tool to put the white over it.

Hope this helps.

This is how its done

Tools you should know to do this.
1. up in the left corner you see the gradient is transparent make sure it is.
2. The opacity of the layer is 31%, wich almost get the same effect, try lower if you want.
3 The gradient tool wich you need.
4 Also you marquee Tool(up in the left corner in toolbox window) to do this effect, otherwise it goes over the entire picture.

How can this be hard to understand? :P

Because thats not what he's talking about! He wants to know how to do the varied colors, hence the title of his post "Line of Colors".
