By using the pen tool, and some blending options. I'm sure there's plenty of tutorials about using the pen tool, you should look around on the P2L tutorials section. Good luck.

That is correct. But I do most of my vector work in Illustrator. I rarely use the pen tool.

You DO know that putting those two sentences one behind the other is a federal crime !
NOT using the mighty pen tool is a real shame ! Shame on you!

And this "realism" is mostly done by a combination of genius gradients and levels changes.

I think he meant he didn't use the Pen Tool in Photoshop, and instead he uses it in Illustrator :P

also if you trying to get the same kinda feel in the picture try using some metal textures along with blending options
