yep, its always a good idea to just draw on a piece of paper what ever comes to mind...seriously.

you could also just browse the web for cool sites and get inspired by them.
i usually just doodle on a paper until i get a general idea of what i want.

trial and error is the way to go.

i don't bother with paper.. nothing i can do with a pencil and paper can relate to what i can do with a computer.

When your just about to go to sleep think of some designs, then in the morning draw them on a piece of paper so you wont forget them afterwards. Whenever you have time, get back to the drawins and reconstruct it on photoshop.

good point. Check P2L's Site of the Week, and other sites, browse like Clantemplates and templatemonster and get ideas off them.

Well there are a few things you can do ... depending on how much time you want to spend on this.

1. Surf till you drop: Just as it implies surf the web till you find something you think you like, or elements of a few sites you like ... combine, add own little twist to things and you got it ;)

2. Surf template sites: Go to sites like TemplateMonster.com and similar to the first suggestion, but this way you are not aimlessly going here and there and end up on a funky flash site and end up spending a few hours there checking out flash toons like atomfilms.com :) This way you see what you want to see ... web designs that may inspire you ;)

3. Combine Objects: This is one of my personal faves. Take 2 objects that you find neat. Like lets say an LCD display from a car system and uhmmm, a speaker. Now find a way to combine these to things, like maybe the general shape of the speaker and interface shape of the LCD frame, or buttons ... well you get the idea. This is a little more then most are willing to go, but all depends on what you are going for ;)

Hope that helped ;)

Edit: Step 3 involves recreating the specific object you want to use with Photoshop (or other 2D graphics programs) with effects, gradients and such ;) Just in case you were lost on that one ;)

you're talking about the header on this template right: http://images.templatemonster.com/screensh...4200/4278-b.jpg

cause that is vector art. it might be a house, but it was vectored.

generally I find free time helps me most with my ideas... get away from the comp, go on a long journy to a random place - instead of listening to an mp3 player on the bus, get a notepad out and start thinking..

we have so many day to day distractions that we block out free though and original ideas... and my advice to you is: free yourself from those distractions :)
