it says create a new material.. well i know how to do that but i don't get the gradient part that the tut creator gets.. how do i get that?
Stage 6, is basically what i am trying to get.

If you want it to look like his render then you actually dont want a material of simple gradient, because he didnt use a material with simple gradient
Yeah kinda misleading, but he used a bhodiNUT 3d Shader, which is easier in the long run anyways. In your materials bar go to File->New 3d Shader->bhodiNUT Volume->bhodiNUT CHEEN. Then double click the material and uncheck the roughness box. then just adjust your sliders and colorpicks as you like and then apply the material. Done!

for some reason i dont see "File->New 3d Shader->bhodiNUT Volume->bhodiNUT CHEEN" unless you mean "File->Shader->Cheen"

You have Cheen in the picture, try it. I think they quit using bhodiNUT in later versions of c4d, so if you dont have the plugins already then your out of luck.
