and they either do so by creating a solid layout (otherwise known as icy or liquid) that fits in 800x600 (so obviously fits in all others) or they create a fluid layout (collapses or expands to fit the specific screen resolution)

heres a helpful link:

The terms i've heard of are Fixed and Liquid or Fluid... Last 2 being the same.
And it's becomming rather accepted among web desigerns to make fluid templates so the stretch/shrink to fit all resolutions.

I believe Donna posted an article related to this in the Articles section near the top of the forum.

i plan on creating my next site layout to be fluid.
but usually i make them with a width of 780-90 to fit in alll resolutions.

and fluid is the same as liquid, but liquid isn't the same as solid. i never heard anyone say icy though.

There's:

Ice: Fixed width, planted on the left side of your browser and doesnt move from there.

Jello: Similar to Ice, only thing is it's centered on your browser, keeps it's fixed width.

Liquid: Stretches to fit the width of your browser at all times.

Personally, I do Jello at resolutions that can fit into an 800* resolution, meaning about 790 or so. I dont think the time has passed where the majority of people use 1024* and everyone hates horizontal scrolling.

I'm no fan of the names either, when someone asks me what kind of layout itd be or I'm recommending to a client, I dont say "hey, I think we should go Jello on this one". The names are just what I've read they're called.
