Illustrator. Everyone I know in "the business" says Illustrator is the best to learn, but learning both couldn't hurt.

If you're just doing it for recreation, I.E. not pursuing a career, I would just learn Illustrator. If you are planning on getting a job in the graphic design or printing industry, definitely learn both.

I worked at a graphic design place for two weeks for work experience and the use Illustrator. I have it myself and I find it a lot better than what Freehand was like :)

Many companies prefer Illustrator, however I have personally seen a few use Freehand. So learning both is your best bet, but Illustrator should come first.

Its what ever suits your workflow, I know some people rave about Fireworks but I cant use it, give me Photoshop anyday.

Download a 30 day demo of illustrator (not sure about freehand though)
