I have been asked about setting up web server at home.
I have a colleague who creates websites for local companies and his bandwitis limited to 5omb so he has decided to host the himself, what does he need to consider and how easy is it to set up a web server?

There are a few issues here.
Does his ISP allow this? Many don't and some even block port 80. Also, he will need some good bandwidth is he is expecting alot of hits. His computer is also going to have to be on 24/7.
Other than all this, he needs to have apache or a similar webserver software, a good firewall, php/mysql server if he needs it and the right router configuration.
There alot of decent web hosting plans for around $5 per month, and I think it's a much better idea to just get that.

Yes, I would first suggest using Server Seed or iPowerweb... but if he really insists on having his own server (like I once did), then he definately should buy a book called "Setting up LAMP" by Eric Rosebrock, the owner of PHPFreaks.com. I purchased that book and it is absolutely awesome when it comes to server setup and maintenance (if you actually read/follow it from the start and don't skip parts!) I'm not trying to advertise something here, but this book really really shows you what's up with webservers, it shows you how to do an ftp server, SSL, apache config, installation of everything, a FULLY FEATURED MAIL SERVER and everything! If you ever have any questions about something concerning web servers, just PM me, I'll be glad to help if I can.
