what i would try and do friend , is make your curve with the pen tool . at this point it dosent matter if it's not smooth
next hold down the CTRL key and in the layers window click your curve layer , you should now have the dotted lines round your curve layer , next goto the channels tab in the layers window , and click the mask icon it looks like a square with a curcle in the middle , that should make an alpha layer , click this alpha layer then it will come up on your screen , now you will need to deselect the dotted lines -hold CTRL key and press the letter D , or goto select and click deselect .

Now goto filter blur and then gussian blur , mess around with the blur settings , so you still can tell what your curve layer look's like , once that is done goto image then levels and play with the 2 little arrows on the left and right

this will make your lines look really smooth and nice looking , i use this methed all the time

here is a pic i created useing the blur and levels methed , to give you an idea of the type of shape's you can do

If you click - drag with the pen tool you get curved lines instead of straight line.
All you have to do afterwards is taking the direct selecting tool, to move the "curve handles" so the curve is like you want or to move the curve handle to the point you initiallly clicked so at one side you wont get a curve but a straight line (like here).

This is the short version, but i dont have the time (its 1 am over here and i wanna go to bed ) to make a real tut.
Tell me if you want me to explain further (lets say thursday)
