Not very organized I'll admit, but it's pretty easy to understand :)

In this tutorial, I will teach you how to make a sig like this:
Posted Image
Before we begin, you will need:
Grunge Brushes
Blood Or Paint Splatter Brushes(I'll be using custom ones)
A render.

1. Start by making a new image, don't make it too big, I'll be using 350x100.

2. Now make another new image, 16x16, background: white.

Take the selection tool, change the mode to "fixed size" set it to 8 pixels wide, 16 pixels high. Click anywhere outside the image bounds and it should make a selection over half of the image. Choose color #e1e1e1 and fill the selection. Then Edit > define pattern.

You're done with this image, close out, you don't need to save it.

3. Make a new layer and fill it with the pattern we just made. Hide it for now, we arent using it yet. Now get the gradient tool. Load up the simple gradient set(just like loading brushes.)

Pick any of the simple gradients, try to choose one that matches the render. Be sure when you're using the gradient to go outside of the image boundaries to avoid an overly contrasted bg.

Unhide your pattern layer and set it's blending mode to soft light.

It seems light now, but don't worry.

4. Load up your grunge brushes and brush a little in black over the image, go soft light or overlay based on preference.

5. Now we are going to create an ornament htat will be the basis of the background of the sig. Get the custom shape tool and load up the "Ornaments" set.

Before we get to work, look up on the toolbar, look for 4 pairs of boxes and one by itself, click that one.

On the far left there are 3 boxes, be sure that you have clicked the first one.

Choose an ornamental shape and put it out ther, choose another one and place this on top of it, repeat as amny times as deired, but not too much though.

Duplicate this layer one time and edit > transform > flip horizontal. Take the move tool and slide it over a bit. Group the two layers together.

6. Here's the part where we let artistic expression do the work, randomly duplicate this ornament, scale it, and rotate it all over, try using whit instead of black for some shapes. Fool around with blend modes as well, difference and exclusion can put out some interesting effects.
Posted Image

It looks a little plain now, so were gonna take out our splatter brushes. Group together all those shapes and add a layer mask to it. Brush in black lightly with the splatter brushes.

7. Now is the time when you add your render, now is a good time to blend it, but don't blend it a whole lot. Add a layer mask to the render and brush very lightly with the splatter brushes in black.
Posted Image

Now take your group of ornaments, set it's blending mode do multiply or darken if there is more darker colors in there, and lighten or screen if there are more light colors in there.
Posted Image

This looks pretty bad, don't worry.

8. Take your spatter and grunge brushes and mask off parts of the duplicated ornament layer until it looks pretty good, you want some of it to come up over the render, but not too much.
Posted Image

9. Now for the smudge part, I do it slightly differently then most, but pretty much the same.

Reset your brushes and choose the one that looks like the 3 blades of grass.

Duplicate your render 5-6 times and group them all together.

Now, copy my brush settings as featured here:

http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/9071/br...ettings28op.jpg

With the smudge tool set to have a sterength of 100%, smudge very slightly outwards on every render copy except for the top one. Fool around with blending modes again.
Posted Image

You may also want to lower the opacity of your ornament layers slightly so that they blend better.

Make a new layer on top of all the others. And then image > apply image.

Filter > sharpen, fool around with the opacity of that layer until you get something good.

That's pretty much it, just tweak it, add text, color balance etc.
