I have a problem. Everytime I open a certain few images they show locked in the layer screen and I cannot do anything with them. What is this layer lock and how can I remove it?

You might have the wrong layer selected and viewed. You will need it unlocked and the view icon and the image selected (highlighted) inorder to modify it.

The layer is the background layer, double click it to promote it to a regular layer. If that fails, go to Image > Mode> RGB and try double clicking again :P
