Two things, the first being the more favorable choice.

1. Is it possible to integrate Wordpress into a site like this?

2. How could I create a custom news system like this? I searched the tutorials but found no tutorial that gave information on how to make categories and the such.

1. Yes you can I have done it many times....just change the template to look like a site
If you want to make it part of an existing site then you'll need to study the php

2. You are kidding right? There a thousands of news CMS tutorials, just read a few and customise it

1. Which is easier... changing the wordpress template or making it a part of the site?

You customize the tutorial to add categories, it's as easy as adding an extra field in your table.

Which is easier? Well Wordpress has a feature called The Loop which can be used to integrate it into the site. See how to use the loop or do a Google Search for more information
