I would like to know exactly what is involved when building a business listing website, or a yellow pages type website, for example:

edit: link removed by Tirus

How complex is the PHP in order to make this kind of a website? What exactly is involved in making this type of a website? Is MySQL needed as well? Would a beginner at PHP have a hard time creating a website like this?

Thanks.

Not sure if these are the same kind of thing:

Don't recognize that one but there are places that sell these:

also have a look through:

last but not least hotscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/ (hotscripts has just had a huge clean up too so am not sure what is there anymore)

Thank You for the reply Donna, the sites do supply the PHP scripts/software I was referring to. I am however looking to build the search system or business locator myself using PHP and other languages that may be needed. This is potentially for a client of mine who would like his own business locator for a company he is creating and if I see that making one myself is regardless of the hard work, possible, I would like to do that. I've informed my client that if I did build it, it would be a huge learning experience for me and would take some time, and therefore I would not charge much at all, but I need to first know if I can actually make one myself.

Would anyone have information on how to build this or can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thank You.

Depends on how secure you make it. If you code it so that only a pro-hacker would stand a chance at finding a hole in the PHP part of things, that would take serious time.
If you do it more at my level (where you just code, and add a few checks here and there just-in-case), then it would be easier, but i doubt a beginner would be able to handle it without going insane. Especially the search application for it. Throw in pagination, and you need either experience, or enough luck to find a pre-made script/tutorial that will do it all for you.

But that's just my opinion. I've never tried to code a site like that, but i'd imagine that it would have some kind of integrated CMS with it as well (and no beginner likes to integrate CMS's with the main site).

Well, this is not looking too good for me :D

But let me try and understand simply how the system would work.

The business's would be entered into a mysql database with their information: phone #, state/province, general category or keyword.

When someone uses the search function, all business with that phone number, or in that state, or with that keyword or a mixture of the 3 are pulled up and displayed as the results.

I know it sounds simple, but it is complicated, and like you said rc, especially for a beginner with no experience like myself.

I am however a really hard worker and fast learner and if I could find a place to start with this, I think I could pull it off. Right now I'm someone who knows what he wants, has the tools layed out infront of him but doesnt know how to use them. ;)

edit: i found some tutorials for exactly this off of P2L, I will see what I can do from them.

wish me luck.

im working on an similar project and is by far the most complicated project ive ever done.
I cant say im a pro-coder, but it requires some coding knowledge and lots of time aswell., ive been working on this for over 2 months now and still not finished, since my client wants more each day. :P
If it didnt pay as well as it does, i would've gave up a long time ago, it has caused alot headaching problems.
nevertheless, it has been a great learning experience for me. ;)

It's a tough job, but not impossible
