Hello,
I am relatively new to 3D Studio Max. After following various tutorials i thought that i would have a go at modeling something myself. Anyway, i have been modeling a bottle that my brother has, the problem is that it is translucent (meaning you can partially see through it). As i am new to modeling i haven't really touched on rendering so this is new to me. So basically i am asking somebody if they could pssibly show me how to render something that is translucent.
By the way. the main body of the bottle is a solid, am i right in thinking that i would have to delete the inside of the bottle to obtain the translucent effect when i come to render it?
All help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
I need a translucent effect please

hey man,
u can achieve transluency not through rendering but material,s o u have to go into ur material editor by pressing M and from there choose color (the diffuse slot) then u should see transperency ro something like that, cant remember cause i dont have max running infront of me right now, and from there set the number, the number goes by percentage, if u cant see transperency and numbers try switching from Blinn type of metrial to phong u can do that by using the drop down meny on top of diffuse slot or somewhere there and choosing phong....
that is real basic, but there are also caustics, that is when u have lightning.
u know when u shine a light through a bottle, the light will refract on a surface in some sort of shape, depending on the shape of hte glass, this is called caustics, and u can control caustics entierly based on the renderer, now ifu are using mental ray, u can set up caustics pretty ueasily, but there are renders out there that are more advanced and have much better caustics, such as vRay and Brazil r/s
but u should learn making materials first then go into lightning and more advanced rendering techniques
