Well I've been a member here at pixel 2 life for quite awhile now. I pretty much just hidding in the shadows take in all the great information. Which I know I should be thanking everyone single P2L member for. So with that I Thank Everyone here at P2L for all their help.

But back to my problem I currently run a average site which Faken may or may not remember, Steel Design which I might add has been neglected for quite sometime, and due to certain problems was taken down from the P2L database on my request.

But I have recently gotten some much need hosting and I'm trying to figure out if I should go with a custom CMS or an already built CMS like Mambo?

I'm ok with going with a custom CMS, but I'm pretty new to php and mysql so it could be a long venture. So my question is what is your opinion on the current CMSes online?

Should I go with a CMS like Mambo or take the time to learn php/mysql and build my own or in your opinion go with something else
?

I'd say build your own. It will be well worth your time to learn that stuff. The first CMS I built was a simple one, took lots of hacking away at it, but now I can code a more streamline one in a day. Mind you it doesnt have all the crazy features that Joomla or Mambo have, but its mine, and I know exactly how it works, and I can now get payed to do it for someone else!

In my experience with Mambo and the others it was actually harder for me to get used to using them heh. If you're already into writing code and are an accomplished designer, then I say you should write your own.

Skinning those things could be more annoying than just making your own from scratch. A long with those endless amounts of features that seem do more harm than good.

Then there are those simpler CMS's, like CuteNews, which I wouldn't recommend. Frequent exploits and what have you, not to mention it's flat file rather than SQL.

So yeah, making your own might be the lesser headache in the end :o.

Thanks for the help guys.

I do have to agree skinning Joomla or Mambo is dam frustating. I've managed to get it all working correctly, but I'm still not happy with it. I've also tried Cute news, but wasn't very happy with the how limited it was.

I really wanted to go with my own, but wasn't sure if it was worth it. But now after trying others, I'm sure the learning and time to do my own will be worth it in the end.

So thanks again guys muchly appreciated.

Regards,

Hey,

I suggest building a custom one, because in the long run it's going to be much more simpler than skinning and modding an already available open source unoriginal one such as Mambo, Joomla. Plus once people know of the exploits they will probably end up doing it too you which annoys people.

So if you want the best results and a nice experience code your own and fully intergrate it into your site.

Dan
