I was absoloutly stunned earlier this month by a former client who decied to transfer their sites domain to have a new site developed by another web company. Putting this asside for now I work with some pretty professionaly colleagues and we work to a pretty high standard I would like to think. Even tho the client has now transferred their site I feel the level of competency of their new website designer to be questionable.

Since the person who is now doing their website has been using a variety of programming technologies and CFM, HTML, PHP and now ASPX.

We mostly use PHP and ASP but I have seen a number of websites that the designer has created in PHP. Where alll they have done is to change a .htm extention into .php and now said, hey look i can code PHP.

To give an example, according to this designer the accepted way to send an email from a form is to connect to another ISP's Formmail script to attempt to send emails. The form mail script that MAY have allowed this was closed as far back as the 1990's and even tho this is the designers selected form of sending emails, he has failed to deliver any form of enquiry or feed back from any of his clients websites. Plus the fact that an error/warning message appears when you click send.

This is just one of many errors glaring errors on their websites and I am sure many of you guys have had similar experencies. But it frustrates the hell out of me that this is the level of some website designers giving the more professional ones a bad name.

However, at least it gives me something to laugh at, at the end of the day. <_<

i agree, tho if the page includes any snippets of php code that is to be executed the page extension would need to be .php... to me it would just make sense to make all pages .php if this was the case...

but yea, if the mailing method u suggested doesn't work (i don't know, can't really code) then that is very incompetant if he's to gain customers' trust and and get paid for something that does not work...

a few of my pages uses PHP and the rest dont, but I made them .php anyways just because it would look wierd to go from .php to .html all the time.

I thank you davey for your reply.

Just to give a little more info on this. But again without mentioning names etc. I was hosting one of the websites that the guy was uploading to. He was running PHP file extentions on a CF enabled server. I viewed one of his files and there was not a single line of PHP in there.

It amuses me further as tommorow the the former clients domain name expires. lol This will be the 3rd domain the provider has failed to renew. Considering its a 3 letter domain it could be snapped up pretty quicly when it de-registeres. Fun Fun Fun!!!!

if u viewed the source of the file after opening it on the server the code would b executed and therefore u wouldn't see it anyways <_<

but that aside, if he's selling buggy sites he shouldn't b able to get away with it

Yes coolaid, thanks for pointing that out. We DID host one of this guys websites so I had full access to what he was creating.

There is a list of errors one i feel is quite amusing. His idea of text for the visually impared was a size 12 font in bold. LOL

Thanks

Why were you searching through your clients files? I would understand if they were hosting porno (sorry if thats explicit) or warez but just to see their PHP thats kinda sad man.

I agree with you, but on the topic about having a php file with no php I do very much the same thing as l3lueMage most of my pages do contain some php but I like my site not switching form php to htm etc. There is my two cents.

Personally, me, I would quit using a service if someone was searching through my code and stuff. Its just privacy. Also think of if your someone with a portfolio and created a super great algorithm for something, and have people pay, or they have a site with VIP areas where you pay to get access, I wouldnt want my host person to get in there free, Im already paying him, I dont need him getting my stuff and making me loose that much more money >.>

I would have to disagree with you here donna. I had to build a 12 page quotation for this client. I have to view the sites in every foreseeable aspect, so as to build my quotation. If i have access to something then I will use it to my advantage. But there is a very long story behind this and I do not want to broadcast it as it would be pointless.

What I am trying to point out is the level of service that I provide, and some web designers here in the UK are supplying to SO CALLED `professional organizations`.
