The campaign, called Explorer Destroyer, takes advantage of a new program by Google to pay users $1 for each referral to Firefox made through Google Toolbar, according to the group's Web site.

"You already want people to switch to Firefox. Now's the time to get serious about it," according to the site. "Google is paying $1 for each new Firefox user you refer. ... Now you can advance your ideals, save people from popups and spyware hell, and make some serious money."

This is something which will seriously hurt IE but not kill it, Microsoft is for people who do not know much about PC's they won't go to the hassle of downloading Firefox, even though its better, in my opion its just a way to tell people no to use it and they are so serious they even offer this lovely offer to webhosts (p2l ;-) )

Quote

According the Explorer Destroyer Web site, the group offers Web-site owners scripting technology that will detect if a visitor is running IE. If so, an alert will appear directing them to download Firefox either to view the site better or at all. Whenever a visitor to a Web site using the group's technology switches to Firefox from IE, the owner of the Web site will get the referral fee if they have signed up for Google's AdSense program.

There are three types of alerts site owners can put on their page -- "gentle encouragement," "semi-serious" or "dead serious."

If a Web site owner chooses "gentle encouragement," visitors to a site who are using IE will see a banner across the top of the page that encourages them to download Firefox. A "semi-serious" site will put up a splash page encouraging a user to download Firefox, with a link for downloading Mozilla's browser as well as a link to the Web site.

Those who choose the "dead serious" rating actually block users with IE from viewing the page, informing them they must install Firefox to view the site. A demo of what happens when a user clicks on a site.

I can see a BIG debate that can result from this. But my opinion. I really don't have one. I like firefox and I would love to spread it and show regular pc users how it can help. Getting paid for it isn't really gonna make me try much harder. I'm not going to make one of those "too cool for ie" sites just to make a dollar and loose thousands of hits.

Thanks for posting this. I haven't heard this before so it new news to me. :D

is the only thing I am shocked about, did google make this, if they did they would never say hell, or "serious money" they are to professional to "curse" even that little bit, or say "Serious money" they would be like pleaged by pop-ups and stuff... but only my opinion

yes I know I spelled "Explorer Destroyer" wrong :D

I never thought about that. Come to think of it, your right, google would never say those things, at least not that I can imagine.

Google would never use such defamotary diction. Its the author of the article who most likely used those words to entice a user.

Personally, I may look into this and apply the "Semi-Serious" or "Gentle Encouragement" script on my website's flash page. I love spreading the news about FireFox, and personally if it can generate a few extra dollars (saving me money), then by all means I will give it a try.

I still code my websites for cross-browser compliance, in fact, everyone who is entering web-design and development should. I think many newcomers in web-development will see this as an excuse to just code for FireFox and neglect the majority of Browsers, which is certainly not a professionally profound way to do business – at all!

Agreed. You will never see the dead-serous on a website which hopes to actually gain hits, I don't like being told what to do...and plus, many sites, such as p2l, I access from my school which, unfortunitly is IE, so that would mean I can't view it because of my schools obsession with microsoft. My main point is this is crap, it will do nothing but show bad rep to Firefox, not because of its purpose but because it means they are desprate enough to pay people to stop using IE ?

You will never see a "Dead-Serious" script on a professionally constructed website, never.

The only time where you will see a "Dead-Serious" script in play is on a website where the 'kid' coding it doesn't know jack about what he is doing and just assumes "FireFox is better."

To be quite honest, I am very excited about Internet Explorer 7 and its improvements over 6. So far the design support in IE7 will equal that of FireFox, maybe even exceed FireFox's support. But then again, I may be taking that bit too far.

ie7 is still below firefox on web standards.

personally, i dont think forcing firefox upon users is smart, or even correct. its straight up wrong.

and what is it with "ie vs firefox" what's happened with the other 50 browsers available.....

tryin to monopilize the internet... im against that completely...

No offense liveman, but that's the most ridiculous and completely assinine statement I have ever heard when it comes to bashing IE. I honestly can't believe I just read that. I run IE because I know how to keep my OS up to date and secure, it's faster than FF, I hate the way FF renders images and finally, because IE currently does everything I need it to do. There is no reason for me to change at this time.

What, I ment was you would never have a person who knows nothing about computers install linux, they stay with what is on the PC and add the bare minmium....So they aren't goin' to go through the trouble of installing Firefox, even though(in my opinion) it is much better...

load of garbage is all I can say to that.

:) I like my IE, and if it was so bad they wouldn't be selling new PC's with it.

thats only half true, it's begin supplied to nearly every already-made pc sold on the market because microsoft pays companies to supply the pc with windows which comes along with ie.

That's odd... I've worked for two computer assembly and retail companies (Built PCs like Dell's build-to-order system) with several hundred PCs going out a day, and the customer paid for the operating system, not Microsoft.

Don't believe everything you hear.
