Because they would get more publicity out of holding a competition, Look at the bbc, they are holding a competition to win a mac laptop and 10 runners up get an ipod, its all about the publicity... marketting themselfs :P

Ten runner-ups get an iPod? I didn't see anything resembling that on their website... But I am sure I can get a spiffy iPod for $250 if I am runner up! :P

I'm going to enter. It will give me a chance to 'professionally' design a website, and I will take my time designing it. This is going to be a very interesting challenge.

LOL! How is this a redesign? Hehe... Check out the desired specks.. retain the current color, retain the font, retain the general look, use the current topic icons and use the current CSS, just modify it with custom images etc...

Not exactly a hollywood makeover.

Not much of a re-design when you can't change very much. You can still maintain branding during a re-invention, much less a re-design. It's more like they want a skin for their current structure, based on the current layout.

And the current design is plain nasty.

Creativity is sparked from constraints. Perhaps more of a realignment than a redesign it seems.

Completely disagree... the more contraints you place on an artist of any medium, the more likely he'll just do as he's told rather than input his own ideas and creativity. That's something you'll learn with age and experience and dealing with hundreds of people in the field like I have, from photographers to architects. You force them to your constraints, you get what you wanted and nothing more, which might not have been the best choice.

As an example, I have been to about 30 weddings in the last few years where I was privy to the wedding planning details. The ones that were unhappy with the photographer results were the ones that told the photographer exactly what they wanted down to a T. The happy ones were the folks that let the photographer do as they wished, so they ended up getting a huge variety of shots and styles rather than the stale choices. What does a couple getting married know about photography after all?

You talk from experience  Never been to a wedding so I can't say that but I get what your saying and I would agree with you 100%

Well I married into a huge family, so I attend tons of weddings every summer. The ones that bomb are the ones where the couple getting married try to micro manage every aspect of the wedding and it just ends up being lame. My marriage was a blast and I was very happy with everything and we basically told the photography, DJ and hall to do whatever they wanted... they were the experts. We got way more than we expected back
