Ok, for the past couple of months I have battled day in and out on trying to learn how to program for IE and keep the site looking good in all the other browsers. Well, today I about had my brain explode when I had a lot of my site done and looking good and then realized I test all browsers but IE... Well I opened up IE and my site looked like I took a picture of my template and moved it around a lot and did an <img /> tag to display it. Seriously, I HATE IE with a passion now.

What I really want to do is have a big box that pops up when a user visits my sites in IE, and when they do this box will appear with a big red message saying "You are using the worst browser known to man, you should make the switch and use Firefox from now on!" Then it will redirect them to the Firefox download page...

I know, I know, this is one massive rant but I'm positive I'm not the only one who wants to literally blow the IE project up so it will never bother programmers again...

</rant>

Really though, would this be ok to do? And yeah, I'm aware that to be successful in the web development business you need to know how to program for IE, but why the hell does Microsoft make it so freaking hard to program for???

to be honest your asking questions that have probably been anwserd already in this forum many many times.... if you would just take the time and look arround you will see...

and even if i dont like IE that much i still use it here and there becaus it is still the number one used web browser out there.... and for some odd reason firefox died on my on my windows... (not surprised sins it is MICROSOFT windows lol) viva the mac :) but yeah if anything the big pop up saying IE SUCKS is a very dumb idea.... and you will never be conciderd a web designer if you do somehting like that

and the poll doesnt matter becaus the NO will probably be the majority

...It's an opinion and everyone is stated to have their own opinion. I know a lot of people who wish IE would die and everyone would just use Firefox (on a windows machine).

Like I said in my post... But no matter what, I have an opinion of saying IE is horrible.

Take this for example:

I have something set to padding-top:5px; in my CSS. Well in IE it is thinking that I have padding-top:1px; but in every other browser (FF, Opera, Safari, etc.) all render the fact that it is padding-top:5px;

Why can't IE read CSS and such properly?

Not to long ago I read something on IE and programming for it. The author stated that to program for IE you need to break your code, and then break it some more just to display properly... But by doing so it is then deffinatly not cross browser compatible because browsers that read code like it is meant to be read will see broken code and freak out.

Ugh, sorry for the ranting, just in a bad mood because of this crap software. Matter of a fact, I'm pretty sick of Windows in all. To bad I don't fully understand Linux yet and a mac is deffinatly out of the question because I'm to poor at the moment to get one :)

I didnt read anything the others posted but, i know you want everyone using all browsers to see your site the way you want it to look. my suggestion, maybe coding one part of your site for ie and make a choice for your viewers to either choose if you have a ie browser click here and all others click here.. or just putting up a note saying works best with all browsers cept IE. ? not sure if you want to spend the time to do that since youve already spent hard work on coding.. but its all up to you. i hope you get it working the way youd like.. take care

look people, dont blame hack css skills and low grade css knowledge on IE, if you learn to use margin, not use paddings, use floats and clears, i gurantee you your site will look good in nearly every browser.

christ.. not another one of these arguments

Basically if your audience is using Windows - you have code for IE.
If you audience is primarily Mac users and your business will only ever apply to a Mac audience - you don't

Simple as that

in IE7 they will have a few fixes... not alot of helpful ones.... but fixes...
Ohh and tabbed browsing aswell.

And the only reason why ppl use IE is because it is shipped with the PC's.

What alot of ppl dont realize is taht the IE project is not a money maker and therefore they do not focus on it.

Now if everyone were to make there sites only accessible thru ANYBROWSER BUT IE(With the exeption of Netscape as they have a few fixes. Why i say Netscape as teh exeption...Well you can view a site in either IE or FF format). It wouldnt really hurt anyone. But its a stand towards the standards with which they barely comply with.

but all in all the man is right, he is intitled to his own opinion, which I happen to agree with, IE sucks the big one, people who keep using it without even trying opera or firefox should be medicated and not allowed to drive.

lmao, thats funny. ie7.com tells you to get Firefox :P

Oh, and I have a new question haha

SHould I program for IE 7? Because I'm assuming that all users who use IE 6 will have to update to IE 7 through the auto update feature windows has.

IE7 is a beta browser for testing purposes

Have a read:
http://www.thinkvita...top-css-hacking

Then pop yourself over to W3Schools and learn how to do it properly.

Well, I've started programming again today on my project and so far so good. I'm liking some of the new CSS features IE7 is accomidating. Also, I've found some work arounds that have fixed some of the errors I was getting. So looks like IE7 isn't nearly as bad as IE6. So lets hope that when IE7 is launched most IE6 users upgrade to IE7.

Looks like M$ is actually doing something good so far :P

Oh and I don't know if this is true or not, but was IE7 coded from the ground up? Was it a complete recode of their browser?

nothing is a true recode, trust me.

Also, I have found that if you simply make your pages XHTML valid (Strict, 1.0 or 1.1) it should works in most browsers, with minor adjustments here and there.

Its true, after direct pixel spacing, every browser has different line heights and reads input sizes differently, so be sure to make a layout that can handle stuff like that. (eg. don't use <br /> for spacing).

Bottom line is, if your layout is too intricate, you may have to compensate!

I wouldnt already start coding my sites for ie7 if i were you, ie7 (along with vista) is scheduled to be realeased early next year i think, so the majority of people will still use ie6 for a looong time.

Thing is though, when IE7 does launch I don't want to have to recode my site just for IE7. I figure if I code now then I wouldn't have to worry about that a year down the road. And until IE7 comes out, I will have a notice that pops up above my header saying that the site doesn't work like it should in IE and give the users the choice to go download Firefox. And when IE7 comes out I'll remove that message :o

PS: This message will only appear if the user is running IE.
