some fonts don't have those character in the alphabet. you will just have to use a different font.

Usually the only fonts that work with those characters are the windows default.

when you want to type in a special character, just switch the font for that one character to times new roman, then you can switch back to whatever font you were using before

Are you sure its not the font? because I can type in some fonts, and some other fonts I cannot...

nuh uh, we never heard this prob. before. i think its your font. to make sure it's not the font, use times new roman and do the same thing you were before and see the result.

try copy and pasting what you posted here into photoshop, if it shows the letters than photoshop might have different shortcuts for typing them?

In windows theres something called "desktop keyboard" r something (start > all programs > bureau accessoires (?) > accessiblility > desktop keyboard. (i am translating from my dutch version of windows so you'll have to search a little)
When you have the font go there and see if the é, è, etc... are available, if so, chances are the shortcuts or alt codes are mentioned too.
Try this and see if your right bout your font.

Without having the type tool nor any other tool selected try hiting control+shift. That should do the trick, works in all other programs aswell.

just a guess.. but how about changing the language of the text? if you bring it up in windows -> type theres a language drop down to switch the language of the font.. i'm guessing this would solve your problem

You could also try copy/pasting from your character map tool.

Well a "boring" way to do it is:

Write that character in notepad.
Take a screen shot (Print Screen)
Paste that into photoshop
Trace the character
Put it into your one you want

It just wont be text..

so its not working with any font????? try a different program other than in photosop. then we can figure out if its the way you're trying to do it.
are you holding the alt key and pressing the numberpad?

I did some look-up (if you can bind these key-combinations to F-keys r something:

ã = alt+0227

oh, i will make a table, cos this is going to take ages...
BRB.

I am back, k
hope you can read it, but i think you will:

f.ex. for the character above (ã) you hold the alt-key down while you type 0227, then the charcater will appear.

You could also just go Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Character Map. This also lets you choose the font and youll see which special characters are missing with certain fonts :D.

Anyways its not the fonts in his computer he's already said he can paste from notepad to photoshop and it works, the problem is photoshop itself. ^^^

Is this something which has happened recently, or since youve installed photoshop (have u reinstalled lately and it stopped, i dont neccessarily mean the very first time you opened it). Or is there anything specific youve installed or done to your computer around the time this started ?

yes, is some configuration that is causing that
but I can't find it... i remember that soem time ago I was able to do it
but from that time to now, I can't anymore.

pretty strange, going to try this tomorow:

Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Character Map.
