Because, for me I would think Hosting myself would be alot better..its free...I use my own hard drive space...and our ISP gives unlimited bandwidth. Of course the upload kind of sucks, but Im just wondering what the benefits/downsides are to self hosting your own website

I was wondering if there are downsides to self hosting? Like does it make your server that you are using more vulnerable to hackers? Is there certain things need to be done to secure before hosting yourself?

Check with your isp first, most don't allow you to host home servers.

Alright I will, but I was also just wondering what the benefits/downsides are to it if you are allowed to?

Your IP might change every once in a while, security won't be too much of a problem if you install the server shizzle correctly and urm that's about it. Oh yeah, your comp may get a little slow executing certain scripts like PHP thumbnail generation etc.

Depends what operating system your comp is running, if your upload speed sucks then your site is going to be extremely slow for other users. Also you'll experience your computer slowing down, and if your running intensive programs like a 3d program or even photoshop your sitw will probably slow.

You really need a T1 - T3 connection to host yourself.
My oppinion is use localhost etc to host yourself for testing pages but use a proper host for your site.
With he bills for an extra speedy connection you wont be saving much.
