Cutting Images with the Pen Tool

I am going to teach you how to cut an image, using the Pen Tool. This is the most useful way to get your images as sharp as possible on every nook and cranie on the image, without having to use the eraser. The eraser is only used for the final touches if you missed small spots on your cut...but in most cases, you wont need it as much.

**NOTE: THIS LESSON IS ONLY WORTH TRYING IF YOU HAVE ALREADY READ AND DONE MY PREVIOUS TUTORIAL "BASIC PEN TOOL METHODS".**

Ok, lets use a Domo-Kun image:

Now, lets select our pen tool, and make sure that its not selected to make colored shapes, or, like below:

*You can follow along with this image if you like.

Now, once you have your image open, lets start cutting. Duplicate the image, and you will start on the duplicate.

First, I want to start somewhere simple, so, lets say, I will start at his feet, so what I usually do, is maximize the image to 500%, so that I can see the pixels clearer, and I know where Im going to use my pen tool. Remember the curving technique!!

lets start place the points with the pen tool like so: *TIP: Holding the (ALT) button allows you to freeze the curve you made, and extent the end line further, if you wish, just remember, once you have done this, make sure to click closer to the end line so that there arent any wierd curves, and contunue the cut with the same method as shown below*

So far, I have checked these spots, of where I have layed my curves (the red circles indicate the area of where I made my dot, to make a curve in or out from the image)

Remember, Mouse goes up, curve goes down, mouse down, curve goes up, and if mouse goes left, curve goes right, and if mouse goes right, curve goes left.

Upon getting used to the pen tool, you should have a finished out line like so:

Once you have chosen your image to cut, you will right click it, and choose MAKE SELECTION > which will bring up this box:

When the MAKE SELECTION BOX appears, just click ok, and you will see your image cut selected. click on your MARQUE BOX TOOL, and right click your selected image, and choose VIA LAYER COPY, and there you go, your image has been cut:

I have now thought you how to cut an image using the Pen Tool. Of course, the touch ups on any certain parts, you can do on your own with the eraser tool to get rid of the spots the pen tool couldnt get (remiaing pixels).
