hello fellow pixel2lifers, i was thinking about buying a liscense for an IPB Forum, and i was wondering what the the pros thought of it. Is it worth the money? Is is that much better than the free ones? How do you like it? So if you could please just tell me what you think of it and if you have any recomendations about it let me know, thanks!

I would never ever use phpbb, i'm reluctant to join sites using it now because i hate it so much. If you are looking for a free board you have to go with SMF, its by far the best.

As for paid, personally i prefer vB, however i do like ipb and of course recommend it over any free alternative if you are looking to buy a forum software.

I like PunBB, I used to use phpBB but then I started to get TONS of spam (over 100 accounts but now are deleted). I think IPB is worth the money.

(VB sucks ;))

I bought a perpetual license and have absolutely no regrets. If you're going to get one, I recommend trying to get one second hand from http://forums.invisi...p?showforum=192

They have some good sellers. I paid full retail for mine, and I do have to say, it was a little much. Getting it second hand is definately the better way to go.

That's really all I have to say. I basically just wanna help you buy it ;)

IPB is my love. I LOVE IPB. You can mod it, skin it, and do SO much with it. For example, just look at P2L. Some of my buddies are HUGE IPB moders (*cough Bfarber *cough*). To me, Vb is a lot harder to customize. Another thing is that IPB has a LOT of users to makes mods and skins. Just look at IZE (even though have of the boards there are illegal). Anyway, I would say IPB is very much worth the money. I mean, $70 for a yearly licence isn't that bad if you have a good site making a good amount of money.

I must be odd because I don't like IPB. I hate the admin panel - I find it so bulky. I do prefer phpbb for ease of customisation and management.

I use their Gallery, Blogs, Downloads the IPB Official one and their Forum, used IPB from the day it was released.

If your members are going to use the Gallery it's worth the $$$ otherwise there is a lot of free alternatives around, same goes with the Blog system

I've admined on phpBB2, phpBB3, Invision, and vBulletin boards and so far Invision Power Board and phpBB3 are my favorites. I'd probably stick with IPB since i'm pretty sure phpBB3 doesn't have a stable release yet.

As far as paid forum software is concerned I think ipb beats vB hands down in terms of ease of use, customization, and just overall learning curve. However and I'm sure quite a few folks will disagree with me but imho if your just getting a site off the ground I would suggest one of the many opensource alternatives to get things started. Use it till either the script or your server crys for relief. Then if you know the cost is worth the effort, spend the money on a perpetual liscense. I use one of my friends as a good example, he thought it would be a great idea to start up a site devoted to avatars. He bought a vB liscense as well as everything from vbadvanced to go with it. Dropped almost $300 overall I believe on a site that only lasted a little over year. I just hate seeing people needlessly spending money before they fully know what they're in for. Hope that helps if not feel free to disregaurd.
