3DSMax 7 (or 8 if it exists already) Bible by Kelly L. Murdock
Its a J. Wiley production and those Bible series are really well written, good clear explanations and many tips.

Try this --
Make a box, 1 segment for LWH.
Convert to Editable Poly, Go to Modify Panel.
Now you click the line tool, go down to Quick Slice, and slice a line someplace (click once, then click again to make it slice, you dont drag it). Do it a few times to plan out something.
Then get the Face Select tool and start extruding inwardly and outwardly, and some ideas can spark from that by being able to add faces anywhere on the box you made without any segments.
