Ok I have never really used the align tool in Photoshop, but after using it a bunch in flash I thought I would give it shot.

I created a new layer, made a rectangle and then tried to "Align Horizontal Centers". For some reason, all of the buttons are grayed out.

Can somebody help me?

You have to define an area to center it to. Get the marquee tool, right click, select all. Then switch to the move tool (v) and the align to center button should be selectable

I have an even easier way to centre in Photoshop. Copy your image and select with the marquee where you want the image placing, if you select the whole document it will centre it in the whole document.

It'll also work with 2 layers selected.
