3dsm custom bitmap help

Hi, I've got a problem in 3D Studio Max 8. I've been trying several times to add my own custom made textures or textures I've downloaded (Bitmaps), but after selecting the bitmap I'm not able to add it to an object.

I'm creating a building and I need to add a plank texture. After finding some textures that I might wanna use I add them as a bitmap material. The problem is that the "Assign material to selection" button isn't clickable.

why dont you want to just assign the map to the diffuse slot of a standard material like you have for the other materials in your scene?

it wasnt a rhetorical question :) i was just wondering why, incase i was missing something and you needed it to be like that :D
