Just started a brand new personal site for myself, I plan on having scripts to download and free tutorials and such, but besides the point. I am horrible at making layouts :) So I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice on how to make it LOOK better....

http://danlamanna.com

thanks

p.s. - might take a bit to load, running off my computer and I may be running torrents ;)

I think this thread should be in the Site Show Off and Feedback forum. So don't be suprised if it gets moved ;)

Anyway, site is very plain I don't like the text in the header, I think bevel and emboss is old, and the drop shadow is too overpowering. I also don't like the colours chosen.

If your a learner good on you for trying, and thanks for sharing. Just keep working at it and I'm sure you will get something good out of your time. I suggest you read some tutorials on P2L in the adobe photoshop section if thats what graphic software your using.

Good Luck! :)

PS: This is just my opinion

Well I am a learner in css, plus I have no artistic style...I actually am a fairly good PHP Coder...

But anyway, thanks for the suggestions, also, do you think it would be better if I made a photoshop based layout? I want it kind of flashy and modern.

I disagree with fusionmanx... You don't need graphics to make a page look good. Good use of typography and its layout is good enough.

Sad to say, your site has neither. It looks like a typical site made by a PHP coer that doesn't know a thing about design (no offense, but there are many of these).

I agree its way to plain, you need a lore more things, and center it as well.

Nothing personal but instantly, you can tell you're a programmer. It's very rare you see good programmers have amazingly beautifal websites and you're no exception in this case.

Perhaps a better banner, and lager contrast in colours will help.

There is nothing wrong with imageless designs but you need to either lay them out interestingly or use good colours. Otherwise they will look very boring. Have a look at glen's website as an example. ;)
