hey, im brand new to the 3dsm world and i started a tutorial to make a sword model. it requires the use of splines to make a part of the handle and im having trouble with the whole spline vertexes, welding, fusing, etc etc  im very confused.

my problem is when i get to a part in the tut it asks to surface the splines, and when i add a surface modifier it wont work, it will only surface 2 segments, and the rest of the spline disappears :o i tried playing around with fusing and welding making sure the vertexes are connected and whatnot but im a complete noob so i'm sure i'm not doing it right.

any help is appreciated. thank you ;)

also, if anyone has the time, it would be great if someone could take a look at my problem for me, (perhaps fix it for me  ) here is the .MAX file download

See the attachment, they look connected to the lines but they arent.
You also have a lot of unwelded vertices.

Look at this file I edited:

You had to use the [Insert button] (On Vertice Options) then click on a space on the line to make a vertice.
Then you drag the loose lines to that and click Weld, or in the case it was Fuse. (my first time using fuse).
Weld depends on the Threshold, the number beside it, Im only a little bit into 3ds so Im no expert.

Also, you can right click a vertice and select the type of vertice you want it to be, I made them smooth just
for no reason really, you can straighten them out if you want.

http://www.jream.com.../img/sword3.max

I had to flip the normals so it appears the right way. (youll be doing that a lot in 3d)

When you are in the Modify Panel, you apply the surface.
But hit the plus next to the Editable Spline, and once you click Vertex for example, the Surface should dissapear and you can edit the vertexes. If it doesn't click the lightbulb next to the Surface thing.

Also in the 3dsmax Tutorials, if you are using version 8, maybe lower even, they have a chess tutorial on a Knight (Chess Piece) and it uses this same method, but they don't use fuse. I dont know what fuse it really for but it worked lol.
