I would like to know this as well. This is considered as "SEO" or search engine optimization.
I know that it depends on a lot of factors. The title of the website pages i.e. the html title tags. It also depends on the text within the site and the number of people that are linking to your site.
Maybe some experienced people here can expand on this!

Im not an expert but i believe links directly to your website from high page ranking websites will boost your's up the ladder

I think googles current system takes the text from the pages. I could be wrong, but just make sure the content is fairly good if thats the case.

I have found out on my quest to get up the search engine results ladder text links are the best. When I am talking to webmaster's about link exchange and they say "add my button" I always am thinking are you crazy? To get up the ladder Google and others read the text on the webmaster's site and plugs it into the search. So if you have a text link on the webmaster's main site under the search for their website online right beneth it will be a link to your site because the engine read the text of your link and added it to the search because it keys directly to your site. This is why I do not have a 88x31 button because search engines do not pick them up. Just some useful information.

Well saying that, if you put an Alt on the image, i.e a tagline that also works.

The very best way is to link to a LOT of other sites that have similar topics to yours. They put a link to your site. You put a link to theirs. The Users get more content, and google ranks your site higher.
