Did you try with the filter > distort > spherize filter. Maybe it wont give good results, but it doesnt hurt trying.

If you bought Photoshop, on the installer CD theres a seperate install for the render > 3D filter that used to be standard. That should do the trick.

Try doing exacly the same you just did, but this time make a circular selection double as big as the text, surrounding it, so you got lot of space between text and selection.
Playing with this will make the spherization (does this word exist?) more subtle.

Also you might want to try another font.

The text in the first image was not created by filters.

Simply type out your text, then rasterize it. Now press ctrl+T to free transform your text. Right click your text and then select Perspective. Click on one of the bottom corner nodes and drag it outward.

Now do the same for the bottom text, except this time, drag one of the top corner nodes.

I know this is a little late, but it seems like your second question went unresolved.

To type along the edges of a circle, you just have to create your circle and make sure that it's a vector shape and not a rastered one. With the circle layer selected, and the paths showing (if they're not, just click on the path thumbnail on the Layers palette) then you take your type tool and hover over the path to see the cursor change, and then just click on it and start typing. You can also click inside the circle to have the text confined to the borders of the shape.
