This was driving me nuts, I had worked about 8 hours on a car and it Max kept crashing anytime I applied mesh smooth, for no apparent reason.

It happened in Max 7, 8, and 9. I submitted it to Autodesk to test run it.

Here's what I tried:
- Tried changing to Software mode (was using OpenGL).
- Tried collapsing stack and resaving
- Tried a new document and Merging the file
- Downloading SP1 for max 7 to see if it helps.

What worked was, ODDLY.

Convert Editable Poly > Editable Mesh > Convert Editable Mesh back to Editable Poly. (or vice verse if working in Editable Mesh).

It makes no sense to me, but that saved the day, I hope that helps anyone and remembers this later on. Also, make sure to delete or collapse your stack, remove symmetry and any "special mods" before collapsing.

thats very strange :D i cant think of any reason why that would actually work, but i suppose if it does the trick who cares about why!

ive had this problem to a lesser extent working on large models too, but it only crashes once in a while unlike yours.

my only guess this happened is because youre computer - like my own - couldnt handle the model?
