Does anyone have any good advice for banners? I can't seem to find the right stock images, and I can't afford to pay for a subscription to a stock photo site, so I use the free Stock Exchange. I am trying to redesign my portfolio site, but I can't seem to get it to work. A good example of a style I like is http://www.stopdesign.com but I can't even get started working on a new layout without a good header.
So, it would be really helpful if anyone had:
Good, professional header tutorials (not really into glossy or anything like that)
Any tips with editing stock images to make good banners
Text tips
Just anything. Thanks in advance.

7 Pages of header tutorials and nothing there you can learn from?
I personally prefer to design the layout first, then design a header to match that... sounds to me like you're trying to design stuff to suit the header instead, which is akin to trying to catch a fish with your bare hands in order to attach it to your fishing rod

I've never tried designing the layout first, I suppose I'll try that. And most of the tutorials I saw on this site (I've looked through it) weren't a style I was looking for, and they often weren't for the right thing. I can come up with some types of headers, but right now I'm looking to kind of make an abstracty one with a stock image. I'll try designing the layout then designing the header to match it. It's just I usually use my header as inspiration for the layout/colors used. Hopefully I'll find a new source.
