...I've got this horrendously large audio file (12MB MP3) on my
flash movie which I need to cut down a fair bit...

Where is the best place on the waveform to cut it...on the
spikey bit or on a flat bit...so that it loops...seamlessly?

With audio, your ears are the best bet and tool, not visually editing, it's too limited.
I use either soundcard/creative wave editor and don't zoom, and it shows big full wave, one option only, yet it's my ear and audio judgement to get me into a seemless loop.

Count the measure, hear where it needs to start and stop, then watch the guide bar going across your editors wave area, and then insert cuts in those area's.

It's a mixture of 90% audio, catch the beat, and 10% visually matching the area in wave to slice up/open.

I find it helps to use headphones as well. Cuts out any other noise you might hear.

programs like sony soundforge or sony acid are programs designed for that sort of editting, if youre having trouble cutting it in flash id suggest trying a demo of one of those apps, i believe sony has a limited demo

Just one thing...when you say 'insert cuts'...do you mean that you have to make a lot of
separate cuts - like you have to take various bits of bars and beats etc - and then put
them all together....like you don't cut it in just one place...?

Inserting the region marker in ACID, cooledit, wavelab, soundforge, fruity loops, etc.. any editor allows for unlimited cuts and insertions, yet to keep it simple, just listen and find where u want to repeat/loop and just highlight that area, copy or cut and paste it to new track and save as mp3, due to .swf playback size requires mp3'z and decreases user wait times.

Flash sound options can be found in help/tutorial flash manual in the program itself to experiment with loop, repeat, volume, fade, yet that can be controled before loaded into flash, due to u should set volume, size, length, fades in external audio editor beforehand.

Goodluck, plug ins are amazing and IK Multimedia, steinberg, ACID, Native Instruments all gangbang creativity to its flashy fullest..lol.

Thanks ChangerHipHop...

You sound like a guru on this subject - I feel like Mr Bean - I'd bought 'MP3 Surgeon' earlier this year...looks simple enough...so simple in fact that I don't know the difference between a cut that's blue in colour and a cut that is coloured orange. It can trim, split and join MP3's...???

I did the listening bit...with my ears...and I can't work out if it's 2 beats, or 4 beats, or 8 beats to a bar...but either way I did cut it...but very badly.

It's a progressive dance track/trance...no vox...7 mins...

Should I be using something entirely different to MP3 Surgeon or is it me being a plank?

lol... no u're not being a plank/plankton, u're just working out the kinks, practise and u'll find where to cut/splice. Cool edit pro's discontinued but u can cop it on limewire dot com, soundforge is bangin' as well, I have advanced in my fave full d.a.w. station "ACID PRO" that I do all editing, plugin's sequencing, samplin in one program now, but cubasis/cubase is advanced too. I suggest to keep getting a feel for your current surgeon program or download cool edit or soundforge, they are very straight forward, I am self taught through trial and error, experimenting and manual/help topics in programz.

Crash course on measure/loop counting is the following:

1. Determine purpose of loop, to choose length. e.g. button rollover sound, versus 20 second loop, versus whole splicing of one song, mp3 with another which any editing program can do, just copy each section into a new file>goto>file>new>paste selection and save with new name.

2. Counting... basically, regardless of any tempo, all meaures are followed by the snare or clap. I mean, I count a loop by the beats, the claps/snares. For example usually a 4/4 groove, which is what all dance/hiphop music is structured within, will end up giving you either 4 snares/claps for every half measure and 8 for full measure, depending on the drum pattern/syncopation. But rest assured when I loop small samples, I either cut for one kick or snare, bass, horn stab/sound, zoom in, copy to clip board or new file and always use either 4 snares/claps per 1/2 measure or 8 of them puppayz..lol... claps/snarez.

Music is for healing.

Keep plugin, it's more reliable then a troubled relationship...lol.
