im interested in buying a nice new camera for some high res photography but i dont know much about what to look for
i figure if i get a new camera ill take photography at my school
ive seen a lot of high megapixel cameras for relatively cheap, for example,
Sony Cyber-shotŪ DSC-N2 / 10.1 Megapixel / 3x Optical Zoom / 6x Digital Zoom / 3.0" LCD / Digital Camera for $379.99
i guess i expected a high quality camera to cost a lot more, so is this not the right type for what i want to do?

umm well first thing, if you take photography at school you are encouraged to buy a non digital camera. So you would need to look at getting a second hand 35mm Manual SLR camera.

Well really Matt it depends on what kind of school he is going to. I know that my old school district is trying to completely get rid of film and switch to digital. I think it is a horrible idea myself though.

i think my school still uses film, ive seen people carrying around their big clunky cameras
if i get a film camera, will the image quality be degraded when i scan it in? because if it is ill prolly get a digital because photography at school wouldnt mean too much to me but id want to do a lot of digital work with the pictures

Well yes, the quality usually drops when you scan in a picture, but that is completely normal. I have a film camera, which I like more then digital. I think it depends on your expirience level. I think it is better to get a film camera because I think it's more challenging to get a good shot. With digital, you take the shot, and that's it, but with film you have to take the shots, develope the film, and print the shots. So if you want to just take pictures the digital would work, but if you want a challenge I would use a film camera. The smell is worse, but I think it is more fun.

In my opinion:
Get a DSLR (Digitial Single Lens Reflex)
Don't pay attention to Pixelage. If its a DSLR, chances are its good enough.
Look for something that comes with a lens!
You don't want to spend too much money!
I'm personally getting a Nikon D50, but that is a VERY basic DSLR camera (but a DSLR is a DSLR. It IS a nice camera)

This is a site that I HIGHLY reccommend you check out before buying a camera:
DPReview.com
There are reviews for most brands and models of digital cameras on the market. They don't sugar coat the facts, either. You'll see all the pros and cons to a particular brand or even a specific camera.
Check it out!
By the way, I have a Canon Powershot S3 IS (6.0 Megapixels) It's GREAT. I'd reccommend it to anyone.
Happy shopping,

Yeah, the Digital Rebel XT is a sweet camera. However, I prefer the Canon Powershot S3 IS over the Rebel. I don't know why exactly. It just handles better imo. Plus, you get GREAT shots with the S3.
