My friend in art school has an dullwitted Mac obsessed teacher who isn't really doing anythning as a professor. For her assignment she needs to save an Illustrator document as, .ai [Illustrator], .pdf, and for some reason a .psd[Photoshop]. Why? I have no clue.

Why would you need to have a file open in both Illustrator and Photoshop? Let alone .pdf

Anyway she is also having a problem with the .pdf, she is saving it and when she opens it back up in Illustrator there are no layers just a flat one layer image.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

**edit**
OK I figured out how to do the .psd file. For those who don't know, File>Export> save as .psd > then make sure you have it as write layers.

I am still wondering about the .pdf opening all layers though I am thinking that it isn't possible.

I have been playing the flute for 6 years now and I love it, and I am playing the pipe organ as well. I also like to teach other people the in and outs of software such as the CS3 suite from Adobe.

Glad you found out one part, for pdf with no layers, I belive it is the same as saving it like a .jpg for example. You compress it and flattern it at the same time. If you want the layers to remain, the best is to save as the programs own extension, for Illustrator as you say, .ai! :P

Hope it cleared up!

You can always save a pdf in illustrator and keep the layers editable, for that you just need to save as pdf, and tick the checkbox called "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities"

That's it :P

Thank you both, but I actually found out that when you save it as a .pdf, all the layers are set as layers instead of pages. So when you open the .pdf the default view is pages, and you need to switch it to layers.
