gradiant stroke in illustrator cs

How do i give the stroke a gradiant fill?

As you noticed, Illustrator won't let you apply it directly, so use this little way to get around it.

Create your shape and then convert to a path. Object » Path » Outline Stroke. If you had a shape with a fill before, you will now have two objects. One which is the fill and one, the stroke. Just apply the gradient to the "stroke" and you should be set. An by the way, to make sure to use the Direct Selection Tool (white arrow) instead of the Selection Tool (back arrow). That will eliminate the need of ungroping!

Same result: expand command in the object menu. You'll have 2 objects, you must off course still ungroup them to use the seperately.
