This Newbie says "Hello" and asks for help.

I have a CD full of various digital pictures copied from a memory card. Yesterday when viewing them I was able to see the date and time when the pictures were taken just by hovering the mouse over the pictures. Today I cannot get this information and right clicking on Properties only gives me the date and time when the file was created on CD which is not what I want. I feel sure there must be a way of recovering this information from the CD but I just cannot think what to do to to get to it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I think you used two different programs to view the images yesterday and today. Or you read them of the memory card the first time and the second time from the cd.

I may not have expressed myself very clearly - I viewed the pics on screen from the CD with XnView.. Unfortunately the memory card was deleted and re-used some time ago so I cannot look there and the pics are no longer on my hdd either. I just cannot understand why the mouse read the correct date and time from the thumbnails on screen last night, but it wouldn't replicate it this morning. I have convinced myself that the information is in there somewhere. Am I grasping at straws? I hope not.

It's impossible for a CD-R to delete information that has appeared on it in the past.
You were probably imagining things.

Do you happen to have the memory card used to upload the data to the CD?

Now I am really worried - the CD is RW - but I have not added to or removed anything from it. Is there any way I can get behind the CD's info through my computer's registry for example - worrying thought?

Yes - but the pics were deleted some time ago and the card used again.

Were the images put from the CD to your computer?

I read the CD from the CD/DVD drive. Would it help if I copied the pics back from the CD to the HDD?

The "file created" date for all the pics on the CD is March 2004, when they were burned, although the dates of the various pics go back to different dates from 2002 to 2004.

If the dates when the pics were taken had originally been on the hdd (and I believe they must have been) would these dates not have transferred to somewhere on the CD (or be accessible somehow,) as well as recording the date when the pics were burned to CD - the "file created" date?

Can anyone explain if the "file created" date wipes out the more important "picture taken" date?

<_<   Success!!!!
I have found the dates I wanted for which I must give credit to my son.

In case my query is of any use to others, this is what we did:

Using Irfanview:

View the pictures on screen from the CD and select one of them to find the date taken.
Then left click on File > Open with, and select IRFANVIEW, then left click on Image > Information.
Information Properties
box > left click on EXIF info
This gives everything, date, time shutter speed etc etc

Using XnView:

As above, but Open with XnView then left click on Edit > Properties, left click on EXIF tab and all the information is there as with Irfanview.

This information is not available with Photoshop, The Gimp or HP ImageZone, all of which we tried.

Although I had tried to find the info using XnView yesterday, I was unsuccessful.

Many thanks to all who offered suggestions.
